Volunteer Opportunities

Event Volunteers

Help with special events, such as golf tournaments and galas, special mass mailings, fundraisers, and other short-term needs

Mentors

The mentoring relationship is a bridge between the teenager and the adult world.  Mentors have dual roles - they help the teenager learn skills, behavior and values, and at the same time provide access to resources and individuals in a world where the teenager will be able to apply what he/she has learned and to succeed in developing their full potential.

Advisory Board Members 

Outreach to the community and help with fundraising.  Meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 am

Regular Volunteers, Interns 

Attend volunteer trainings, learn to use the telephones, the community Referral Computer and Phone Line, take the youths on outings, act as support to the Shelter residents, and fill in as needed. The Shelter depends on regular volunteers and interns to support our staff and residents. Three hours per week is a minimum commitment or more can be scheduled to meet the needs of the volunteer/intern. Interns may take on special projects instead of regular volunteer duties.

Special Volunteers, Youth Volunteers, Family Volunteers

Opportunities are available for youth and families to offer support and services to the Shelter through a variety of activities. Trainings are provided and hours are flexible.  Below are just a few examples of the wide variety of the services volunteers provide.
  • Present a fun inspirational or informational event for the residents. This could be an art project, something musical, a slide show of general interest to teens, an encouraging talk, or anything that might be entertaining for the youths.
  • Water the flowers twice a week, cut grass weekly.
  • Stop by and take the youth to the gym, jogging or on a walk.
  • Bring in a meal for eight, once a week or once every other week or come make dinner at the Shelter.
  • Transport food from the Food Distribution Center in Orange once a month.
  • Take youths to AA, CA, NA, or Alateen meetings.
  • Help the office; help in publicizing the Shelter; be part of the Speakers Bureau; solicit donations such as art supplies, towels, sport equipment, etc.; coordinate special events
  • House maintenance such as gardening, plumbing, and electrical.

Victim Assistance Programs Intern/Volunteer Opportunities

Victim/Witness Center Volunteers – As a Victim/Witness Center Volunteer, you would provide court related assistance to victim/witnesses of crime and their families.  Your duties might include direct assistance to clients, providing information and referrals to appropriate resources, follow-up and general office support.  Positions are available at the Court Centers in Fullerton, Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach, Santa Ana, Westminster, and Juvenile Court in Orange.

Sexual Assault Victim Services Volunteers – Volunteers provide direct crisis intervention and emergency assistance to survivors of sexual assault and their families. This is accomplished through responding to hotline calls, providing on-scene support at hospitals or assisting staff in the sexual assault offices. Volunteers must complete a 48-hour state certified training that covers topics related to sexual assault and the role of the counselor. Trainings are offered two times a year. Domestic Violence Assistance Program Volunteers – Volunteers in this unit provide assistance to office staff and victims of domestic violence who are filing Temporary Restraining Orders.  Your duties would include answering telephones, screening clients for appropriate services, copying documents, and assisting clients with actual completion of the T.R.O. paperwork.
Gang Victim Services Volunteer – As a gang Victim Service Volunteer, you would assist victims of gang related crimes.  Volunteers provide general assistance and support to the staff.  Your duties might include direct assistance to clients, providing information and referrals to appropriate resources, client follow-up and general office duties.

Dispute Resolution Services Volunteer Mediator

Trained, volunteer mediators provide information about mediation services to disputing parties, give referrals as needed, assist with general office support, complete intake with new clients, conduct follow-up phone interviews with clients, and conduct court & community mediations.
