Every 15 seconds a woman is battered in the United States. Domestic abuse can strike any household. National
statistics indicate that as many as 50 percent of all woman in America experience violence in their intimate relationships. Besides physical beatings, battering can involve threats of violence, verbal abuse, and/or sexual assault.
Victims of domestic abuse often feel isolated, powerless, fearful, guilty, and dependant financially and/or physically. Domestic violence can leave victims feeling trapped and helpless.
Domestic violence can have harmful long-term effects on children. Children who learn violence at home are at risk to continue the violence as adults, whether as batterers or victims.
Victim/Witness Assistance Programs is well equipped to help victims of domestic violence. If you are a victim of domestic violence contact your local Victim/Witness center or one of the specialized departments.

If you are in a violent relationship, seek help now. The domestic violence services listed here are to assist you with obtaining a temporary restraining order and to provide referrals for safe housing, counseling, and criminal justice support.
The Domestic Violence Assistance Program (DVAP) is especially designed for the specific purpose of aiding victims in obtaining restraining orders.
Domestic Violence restraining orders:
A petition must be filed at the Lamoreaux Justice Center to obtain court ordered relief from the following situations:
- An order restraining the batterer from abusing the victim or family members.
- An order directing the batterer to leave the household.
- An order preventing the batterer from entering the victim’s residence, school, business, or place of employment.
- An order awarding custody or visitations with a minor child or children.
- An order restraining the batterer from assaulting, molesting, or interfering with the minor children in the victim’s custody.
- An order directing payment of child support for minor children
- An order directing either or both parties to participate in counseling.
