Teens Bring Smiles to CHOC Patients
Since when are macho-aspiring male
teenagers getting excited over making Teddy Bears? They’re getting excited
when those very same Teddy Bears are destined for delivery to the children’s
cancer ward at CHOC, the Children’s Hospital in Orange County. While the
very simple blue and yellow patterned cotton teddy bears were being
constructed, oh yes, with needle and thread by hand and by machine, there
was considerable discussion with their teacher. What did it mean to be a
little kid and have cancer? How uncool to lose your hair and walk around
bald. How ugh to take chemotherapy again and again and know it was going to
make you feel real baaaaaaaad. The questions kept coming and teddy bears,
all 22 of them, made it to completion.
These students are part of the 8%
Project spearheaded by the Orange County Probation Department, adolescence
who have already been identified as high risk. CSP is cooperatively
responsible for helping design Community Service Projects. Something these
youngsters have never before been involved with or even been aware that
Community giving existed. |
