Victim Advocates
Victim Advocates are well trained professionals skilled in assisting crime victims and witnesses through the aftermath of crime and assist crime victims in locating and utilizing resources to better their emotional and mental health. All advocates must have either a college degree or two years experience in a related field a must complete state mandated entry and advanced training. Specialized Victim Advocates must also show a greater understanding of victimization through education and direct experience in the field. All advocates must have a thorough understanding of: the criminal justice system, victimology, crisis intervention, cultural/ethnic diversity, and the California Victims of Crime Compensation Program.
Victim Advocates are available in all court centers and through specialized victim services to assist all crime victims, their families, and friends as a liaison for law enforcement and prosecutors. Advocates become involved soon after the crime has occurred; either directly by law enforcement agencies, through referrals from prosecutors, or directly by victims of crime. If you are a victim of crime and need a Victim Advocate contact the nearest Victim/Witness center. An advocate will be willing to assist you even if an arrest has not been made or the District Attorneys office has refused prosecution.
